One year ago today, I got into Supernatural. And I was planning on doing a thing, but it turns out the whole fandom has a Supernatural birthday today too! :D
It's kinda awesome that SPN shares my SPN anniversary (ok, the other way around). The only likely conclusion is that some fans cast a spell last year, to bring new fans into the fandom, and I'm one of them. Thank you for not making me fall in love with a donkey, you guys!
So maybe I'll do a thing in the near future, today wanna tell my "getting into SPN" story :)
I was really into Sherlock, and going crazy over the lack of new episodes. And there was this show I was told was not a shallow misogynistic icky one, though it seemed to be. I'd tried watching a few episodes*, but it just didn't really catch me. But I had nothing to watch, so I gave it yet another shot, deciding to disregard the spoiler problem and start from season 4. After School Special. And then I stayed for anther ep, and another, watched five or so that night.
And I thought - this is great! It'll be like methadone, get me over the Sherlock cravings, and it's safe, it's not anything I'm gonna fall in love with!
Happy birthday, Supernatural, show and fandom. I love you.

______
*the one with Amber Benson and a bunch of one around it, and Windego, as it turned out, but though it was sorta nice to unexpectedly stumble across a "Tara" episode, and the ep was sort of OK...

Date: 2013-09-13 01:11 pm (UTC)Glad you found us, and how could Wendigo NOT have hooked you? Dean in all his smirky cocky charming ways? ANyway, sherlock shmerlock, happy supernatural one yearish anniversary!

Date: 2013-09-13 01:23 pm (UTC)I wasn't into Dean's cocky, smirky side until I met his vulnerable, caring side. He was too pretty, and I just didn't care about what they were doing... I do now, though!
Thank you, bb! <3

Yay for the lust, go lust :)
How did you get hooked?

Date: 2013-09-13 03:19 pm (UTC)I am more in love with fandom probably than I am the show. I would give up the show for fanfiction hands down. As long as I didn't have to give up Jensen Ackles's face. That's why I don't angst too much about what's happening on the show, I'm happy just to see the boys interact every week and then let fandom fix it all. I am a fangirl of fangirls, I just think they're wonderful♥

Date: 2013-09-13 04:10 pm (UTC)Wow, that's from even before the beginning! Sounds really wonderful. I'm trying to catch up on early Jensen Ackles, some of the movies and series', watched his season of Smallville (seriously, is there anything that guy did that didn't involve incest?!), and some of the DOOL on youtube - I'd have loved to watch his whole part there.
It's amazing that the show got you into fandom like that! *Awesome*, awesome story!
What's your tattoo? Sounds like a good one to have, I like its meaning to you.
Ooh, tough choice! I prefer fandom to the show, though I'm not sure fandom would stick around without the show, and it's hard sometimes without new things to play with... for inspiration and juice...
Also, there's the creators, to me, too. I know it's wank (sorry), but I'm still broken hearted about Jensen and his comment to that bi fan. I mean - it made me cry, it changed my relationship with the show/fandom.
So. So yeah, that means a lot to me too... don't mind the politics of the actual show as much - I'd mind if they were awesome, but when they're transphobic or glorify the glorious glory of white guys it's just - eh, show... that sort of thing I mostly laugh about or speculate about with people - bless fandom!

Date: 2013-09-13 04:46 pm (UTC)I have what I think is the most badass Dean tattoo ever, but of course I'm completely biased.*G*.........http://meesasometimes.livejournal.com/32401.html...........pics there on my journal. It's from TorCon where Jensen signed it and I'm having his signature tattooed on. Yes, I'm crazy and obsessed that way. I feel like you were forewarned tho :P oh wait, I can add a photo to this comment, this is the stuff I always fail at.
though I'm not sure fandom would stick around without the show, STOP IT!!! You're feeding my abandonment. fear. I cannot bear to think of the shelf life of fandom when the show is over. :( I'll be the last fan standing.
but I'm still broken hearted about Jensen and his comment to that bi fan I don't know this comment. I know the general gist of what your saying tho with the show politics and choices, but hooray for fandom.

Date: 2013-09-13 05:22 pm (UTC)Tattoo - Hah, that's so cool! The tattoo, and the pictures from conventions!
Oh, please, crazy and obsessed? My life is tied to my fandom(/s) in many ways, and it's meaningful and people who say mean things about it shouldn't ever get spanked.
Abandonment - Sorry, sorry sorry sorry, I fear that too... {hug-if-you-want-it}
The comment - he was just :(
I'll guess you'd rather not know and drop it.

Date: 2013-09-13 05:49 pm (UTC)Um, it's not terribly exciting, I was heartbroken after leaving the Brokeback Mountain fandom and a very bad break-up and so a friend of mine gave me the first 3 seasons of SPN to distract me. Wendigo completely hooked me and I blew through S1-3, I think I watched S2 in one weekend lol. I didn't get into fandom untill S4 and started off in the Destiel corner of fandom which didn't last all that long due to massive wank which was always going on over there plus I just completely fell out of love with Castiel at some point. Like meesa I then discovered wincest !!! and every single thing SamNDean (best day of my life! lol) and this corner of fandom and made many many awesome lovely friends ♥ My LJ and my corner of fandom has always been my HAPPPPY place too and I like to keep it that way, RL can be shitty enough. I love Show unconditionally and am very easy to please, I don't take apart every single episode, you won't find much or any wank or extremely deep thoughts abt Show on my journal and, again like meesa, (braintwin! :D) I just really really really enjoy having the boys on my screen each week ♥

I love that you were a Destiel shipper for a second there, I never would have guessed!
A new fandom is so great for getting over heartbreak... it's a sort of falling in love, to me...
Isn't getting to just watch as many episodes as you can awesome?
Thanks for telling the story {}

Date: 2013-09-14 02:46 am (UTC)I'm curious: what was it like just jumping in, starting mostly with the 4th season and a handful of earlier eps? Was it confusing? Why did you decide to start with s4? It's so hard for me to imagine just jumping in like that! /o/ But then, I am such a spoiler-phobe. /o/
I like Sherlock, too!

Date: 2013-09-14 12:27 pm (UTC)Early seasons often don't work for me, the first time around. Community, Doctor Who... I suspect Firefly would have and Revolution might become things I love when there are later seasons. Joining around season 3-4 often works for me, cause it's usually very easy to figure out what happened, and that's often the time where the relationships are complex and interesting to me, and the show went through the most obvious plots and either collapses or comes into its own. There are exceptions, many of those (Veronica Mars, Sugar Rush, Weeds), but when I can't get into a show, that often works . And then, once I find something to care about, I go back and watch the rest and usually love it.
By season 4, Dean was way more open, I seriously was sure that his macho bravado thing was this remnant of earlier seasons, and that no one was expected to believe it. That the writers, the fans, the actors all considered it this shell, for show, for the network, not exactly part of the character even, around the most amazingly beautifully vulnerable man on TV. That's what it looked like to me, coming in in the middle of season 4 :)
Sam having powers didn't surprise me, I was surprised to find out they didn't always have powers. I really like that generally hunters don't even have (official) powers. There's something very hands on, make your own destiny even though it's gonna crush you, look out for your own, about that, that's rarely on TV.
This is really fun to share, thank you {}
