If you could request more of a certain type of fic, which would it be?

There are all sorts of fics I like. I appreciate a new take on a well explored theme, interesting, intricate explorations of characters, and perhaps even more, of relationships, and if possible, of the world, though that is something I am less hungry for. And I adore recovery stories, stories about beng fucked up etc - when they are - truthful, gentle, respectful....?

But if I had to choose just one sort of fic to have more more more of - it would almost for sure be the classic Wincest (or gen! But if I am choosing one, then Wincest) sort: epic love, the other person is more important that literally everything else, the world is large, unknown, scary and interesting, the road trip vibe, music, banter, all the interesting things they encounter, pining, incest drama, all their isolation and ISSUES, so many lovely issues, and they ways they play of each other.... they actually finding something good in each other, worth the, well, hell they go through.
I want more Coast on Through, Oh, it is Love, The One You'll Know By, and of course, my love, And I have Asked to Be Where No Storms Come

I would pay for well written present day Wincest with freaking out over incest. Yes, they went through hell, but they are still people and still influenced by this world....

Also, I so so so so want more RPF that is about characters and relationships, that is about characterization and that is thought through - preferably non-au

Is RPF not usually about characters and relationships? (Honest question--I've not read very much of it at all, and now I'm curious. Because if it isn't, what is it about instead? Is it heavily based on world-buiding [like with the more extreme AUs], or?)

From: [identity profile] citrusjava.livejournal.com
I'm gonna generalize and so forth a bit unfairl, and say that it more often is more about plot, tropes, genre. It's about retelling classic stories or movies (it's sort of plot-napping for them as the original text, maybe) or playing with genre (fairy tales, spy novels etc), or favorite tropes or kinks.... When the characterizations do get attention, they are often not realistic (which is definitely a literary choice, I like it less, but it's not any less of a good choice), centered around one or a few characterizations, nd often not particularly connected with "canon"

I crave character studies, relationship based fic, yk....

Ohhh I see; yeah, I wouldn't...really be into the plot-napping, really, unless they were maybe doing something actually interesting with it. And now that you mention it, re: those kinds of genre--the dragon AUs, or the spies AUs, etc., I DO see those a lot. But since I'm not interested in those genres in fiction generally writ, I'm not really into them in fic, either. Because I too am very character-centered, and character-interested.

Do you ever re-read fics? How about triple-read?

yesyesyes....

Not as often and more often than I'd like, though. Some, I love so much that I don't want to ruin be rereading, or by rereading a lot - and I just keep them loved and safe and frozen as I drift away from them, usually....

Some fic I've reread trying to find points for a literary analysis I wanted to to write, that was interesting - though I don't know if that's the sort of thing writers would be comfortble with, and it was a long time ago, anyway....

and then there is podfic. Some podfics I have taken with me to dangerous/scary places/times, and have listened to to over and over again so many times, so so so so many, -.... some I know parts of by heart, some I know the emotion to brace myself for next sometimes, even if I don't remember the words or plot or troggers to come....
Some of the intonations the readers' used have become references for me, part of a a pop culture fnaodm I may not share with anyone....

yass....

I do wonder about lit analysis in the context of fic sometimes! I think it would be fun, if it were a thing that happened between people who trusted and respected each other.

I've never been able to get into podfic (aural learning is not at all my strong point, and regardless of how good the story/book is I get distracted by thoughts or forget I'm listening to a thing), but I'm glad that it's such a powerful genre for you! And I hope that the dangerous/scary was that way in a way that was good for you, and not in a way that was bad. <333 I'm really interested in hearing more about the intonations as reference thing, if you'd be interested in speaking more about that!

From: [identity profile] citrusjava.livejournal.com
Well, it's pretty common - if you read dean saying "really?" or "son of a bitch", you might read it in the way you know from Dean on the show (or if you don't connect much to listening - maybe the way Dean bites his lip or such) -
then if you read "get this" or "I lost my shoe" out of context, you might still get the intonation they had/ve or you might complete "because you're my brother" -> " and I love you" - boop -

so th same, only with things from the podfics - ways the readers said things, or things being said, that stood out for some reason (can be things not related to the creation itself like the place I would usually start listening or such.... could be an emotional reason, something about the sound, or the cadence of the text.... idk! could be many reasons. Maybe even - some specific lins take me to things I experienced as I was listening, so maybe that....

I'm drifting away from the point.
The same way that I might be walking down the street and my flip flot tears and flaps off my foot, and I go "I lost my shoe " and am amused and comforted by it -
I might - say - be struggling with some self care, which yeah, is a challenge for me in more cases than I'm happy to admit - and I might remember - the intonation of some of the line, usually also the words of the line like "some shit about how Dean’s knee is sprained and he needs to stay off it, keep it elevated and ice it and maybe tell it stories and sing it songs, blah, blah, blah, more bossy, controlling stuff that Dean tunes out" from [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis's Be Mine, and that could take some of the stress out of it, cause it might e comforting or make me smile.

What makes you give up on reading a fic?

Sometimes I just lose interest, or drift away from WIPs that are being updates very slowly ....

but mostly, it'll be a certain amount of "strikes" - either triggers or just little things that I hate. Some writers make sexist jokes, or wife hating meanness, or are so heteronormativity!yay
or such
that I don't enjoy their fic - and I've tried to staym but this seems to persist - so just -

If you could request more of a certain type of fic, which would it be? The things I like best about fics don't prompt well and don't really summarize well, since what I like best are the non-moments and little details and pointless wanderings. Except you can't really prompt those things because then by definition they become the focus of the fic, and the non-moments become moments, the random details unrandom, the pointless wanderings pointed. Like, say I love it when Sam has to read the instructions to figure out how to work a motel's arcane coffee maker (random example; I don't have any particular interest in this scenario, though maybe now I do, XD). I wouldn't actually want to request a fic about that, because what I really want is a random pointless offhand mention of a scene that might involve that, in the middle of some fic, the point of which has NOTHING AT ALL to do with that throwaway scene. That's what I really want.

This is why I suck at prompting. XD

What’s the most hard-core smut or kinky fic you’ve ever read (be honest)! Difficult one; I guess I don't tend to be terribly surprised by what happens in fic, or I guess like, not in the sense that particular situations get ingrained in my memory. STRANGE AS THIS IS TO BELIEVE, I KNOW, I actually ran the kink meme in my fandom before SPN, and we had tentacles already in canon, so.

Do you read AUs? I don't seek them out, but I've certainly read them. I'm most interested in canon-timeline or divergent-timeline stuff, but AUs can be fun, too, provided they engage their canon source interestingly.

Do you read crack? Again, I don't seek it out, but I've certainly read it. My favorite kinds are random transformations, particularly for Sam, for whatever reason. Not bunnies or cats or cute stuff but like, CREATURES FROM THE DEEP. INVERTEBRATES. END TABLES.

What makes you give up on reading a fic? The usual things, I suppose. A specific back-click I can actually remember is this fic where of the Js was convincing the other to divorce his wife so they (that is, J2) could be together 4ever. NOPE. I think the reasons I won't read a fic in the first place are probably more telling, though more asshole-ish. If the A/N is explicitly antagonistic about the character or (more often) piece of canon it's writing about, I won't read it. Even if it's probably good. You can overwrite/disregard/deepen/alter canon however you want, but I'm only interested if it's a conversation you're having with canon in some way. If I know I disagree philosophically with the author beforehand, I prejudge, and have a harder time clicking on their fic... D: If (I believe) a fic misconstrues (or denies) Dean's relationship with suicidal ideation, I'll probably stop reading, because that's important to me.

What makes you pick up a fic, what makes it sound interesting? That's a really good question. XD Interesting cut text, most often. Which sucks when there isn't any...

What’s the weirdest fic you’ve ever read? Describe it. I dunno, man. I guess in recent memory I read [livejournal.com profile] de_nugis's fic where animal fae take up temporary residence in Sam's hair, which in the scheme of things probably isn't actually that weird on its face. But it sounds like crack and it's not, even though it is charming and often funny instead.

If you could imagine the perfect fic, what would it be like? Something that makes you feel the same damn thing every time you read it, while all the while introducing new facets of itself to you.

If you had to introduce someone to fanfiction with a few fics, which would you suggest? Oh god, I wouldn't introduce anyone to fan fiction. XP I'll let someone else be that gateway. Fan fic is too personal for me to want to have to explain it to someone who doesn't already understand.

TOTALLY get that - and I really very much like your idea re instructions etc!!!!

Do you have other sorts of beloved things, or particular fics you like / dislike getting this in?

I don't tend to be terribly surprised by what happens in fic

Yas this question is so.... naive - sort of - ?
It is all so subjective, and - what really, is going to register aas out there kinkk, anymore?

Feel like saying what fandom? It's totally fine if not!!!!

I'm most interested in canon-timeline or divergent-timeline stuff, but AUs can be fun, too, provided they engage their canon source interestingly

YES! !!!

If the A/N is explicitly antagonistic about the character or (more often) piece of canon it's writing about, I won't read it

Aw, this and your other reasons make sense! and awww, show so much love

Aw, I (in my way) get that....
Any particular interpretation you find disturbing? (if you feel like saying.... )

and I get not wanting to expose something so personal and vulnerable for people who don't already get it, DEFINITELY....

re: the kink question, yeah, that question was sort of weird. Like, I will assume that there's definitely communities out there that are all about sexual zaniness on behalf of out-doing expectations and being ~edgy, but often I feel like for the stuff I've read, if someone's having a/b/o knotting semi-invertebrate tantric sex on the moon in handcuffs, it's not for the sake of causing a sensation but because, for whatever reason, that was exactly the scenario required of the idea/relationship they wanted to write and strongly believed in, and the way it often comes across is that it makes perfect sense within the world of the fic, and really isn't strange at all! I feel like often it's a sort of promise, like, 'I realize this sounds arcane but I promise you it will feel like all the sense in the world.' Which is how SPN itself is often best summarized, so. XD

And haha, former fandom was the manga, Naruto~ In that one my brother pair really did torture and kill each other, so really, Sam and Dean are doing just fine. XD

As for Dean, oooshhh, I don't know if I'm ready to put that to paper. XD But I believe very strongly that it is one of Dean's most consistent aspects [often passive but ever-present], and I think it limns canon explicitly quite a bit, even when (perhaps especially when) Dean's claiming the opposite (9x21-ish, 10x19). And while I'm often pretty open to taking other people's headcanons on just about anything within the world of their fic, reading a world where Dean's apparently entirely non-conversant and unfamiliar with the idea is not something I can do. XP In that vein, S7 Dean is super important to me! Haters gonna haaaaaate XP

You know, i can't.... fic I dislike tends to bug me and I get curious about the likable aspects - surely people enjoys something about it! - and I tned to poke and poke till I am convinced myself....... though I dislike fic that deals with consent without awareness - dislike character bashing a lot - dislike ooc, aus as a genre, though I've read many wonderful AUs, and of course fit that gives me triggers: not a lot of people would like reading stuff that actually harms themh....

Do people know that you read fanfiction?

Yes, yes, yes, I am pretty outspoken about it!

Feel free to ask me any of them. I don't think I'll post this meme myself, because too many of my answers would be boring--about a third of the questions would elicit some variation of "I don't know," or "I don't remember," because specific fics and author names tend to slip through my brain and disappear.

The perfect fic for me is not really – one thing –
But ok – you know my specific likes and dislikes - beyond that -

The perfect fic is long – as long as I would like it, with more f I ever want more
It is well characterized – both characters, relationships and maybe even the world aroun them and the things they do- are specific/considered and interesting, and play off each other well
It focuses on a relationship, slowly
Personal/relationship changes
Pref it’s Sam/Dean, or J2, non AU (canon divergent is cool, though),
It plays off canon interestingly, incorporates the things about canon that are great, and also is its own thing
It is unique
Pref it explores a unique angle of things/relationships/characters/canon

It doesn’t trigger or suick me ffs

Casefic is good if the case is interesting and illuminated the chracters/relationships interestingly

If you could request more of a certain type of fic, which would it be?

Besides Kevin fic in general, and Sam/Kevin fic in particular? ;) Hmm, for sexual kinks: consensual bloodplay and knifeplay; BDSM with non-woobie subs, or where the sub is more experienced; BDSM with doms who enthusiastically love and get off on domming for reasons other than (just) taking care of their partner; BDSM in a loving relationship that has a real S&M component; nonsexual praise kink that's fun and light; nonpenetrative sex of all kinds.

Other stuff: consensual bad sex that isn't exclusively one person's fault; obsessive, destructive relationships where both parties are complicit, and are engaging in mind games with each other; established relationship fic about believable relationship problems; trueform angels/demons and genuinely alien-feeling nonhuman pov fic.

What makes you pick up a fic, what makes it sound interesting?

These days I seldom read something that isn't by an author I know I like, or else recommended by someone whose taste I trust, unless it's Sam/Kevin--I click on pretty much everything written for that pairing, no matter how terrible it looks. Other things: if the summary is well-written in a way that feels to me like the author is on my wavelength, and it suggests the story is about a subject I find interesting, or a kink I like, that makes a huge difference. If it sounds appealing enough I may try it, even without a rec or a lot of pre-existing interest in the pairing. On the flip side, if a story on AO3 has more than a half dozen lines of tags, there's basically no chance I'll click--it probably has too many ships/characters for my taste, and too much overly complicated plot.

What’s the weirdest fic you’ve ever read? Describe it.

This is one of those questions I have a boring answer for--I honestly don't remember. I mean, I've read a ton of bizarre fics on the Kink Meme, but that feels like shooting fish in a barrel, and really it's all relative to what you're used to. The tamest a/b/o fic is weird by the standards of anyone who isn't in the fandoms where it's prevalent.

I loved your description of the weirdest fic you ever read, though! It sounded like someone had just written down an unfiltered dream, which is the vibe I get from some of the weirder fics I've read.

If you could imagine the perfect fic, what would it be like?

That varies depending on the fandom and ship. Since Sam/Kevin is my current OTP, let's go with that. A perfect fic would be canon-verse, 10-20k, and a significant portion, if not all of it, would be devoted to their relationship after they got together. There'd be a fair amount of crazy!Kevin being psychologically unstable, and Sam's screwed up history would hang over everything that happened between them. Intense, damaging fights paired with equally intense caretaking and comfort, from each of them to the other. The author would have an awareness of the troublesome power dynamic between them, and weave that into their relationship. If you want to throw kink into it, at some point Sam would give Kevin nonsexual praise related to his intellectual/research abilities that excited Kevin in a sexual way, and at another point Sam would consensually cut Kevin and taste his blood.

I tried to relook at that magnet fic. It is still weird. Not what I remembered exactly, but mostly I understood mocre about it from the comments....

Still, the author wrote one of my favorite fics, and not unlike the things you describe, eestablished relationship, only on my boys..........
